چکیده

In this paper, we investigate the efficacy of subdomain testing and random testing using the expected number of failures detected (the E-measure) as a measure of effectiveness. Simple as it is, the E-measure does provide a great deal of useful information about the fault-detecting capability of testing strategies. With the E-measure, we obtain new characterizations of subdomain testing, including several new conditions that determine whether subdomain testing is more or less effective than random testing. Previously, the efficacy of subdomain testing strategies has been analyzed using the probability of detecting at least one failure (the P-measure) for the special case of disjoint subdomains only. On the contrary, our analysis makes use of the E-measure and considers also the general case in which subdomains may or may not overlap. Furthermore, we discover important relations between the two different measures. From these relations, we also derive corresponding characterizations of subdomain testing in terms of the P-measure.

Design of Accelerated Life Testing Plans for Products Exposed to Random Usage

< p>Accelerated Life Testing (ALT) is very important in evaluating the reliability of highly reliable products. According to ALT procedure, products undergo higher stress levels than normal conditions to reduce the failure times. ALTs have been studied for various conditions and stresses. In addition to common stress such as temperature and humidity, random usage can also be considered as anoth...

Constraint Programming for Random Testing of a Trading System

Financial markets use complex computer trading systems whose failures can cause serious economic damage, making reliability a major concern. Automated random testing has been shown to be useful in finding defects in these systems, but its inherent test oracle problem (automatic generation of the expected system output) is a drawback that has typically prevented its application on a larger scale...

Test case selection with and without replacement

Previous theoretical studies on the e€ectiveness of partition testing and random testing have assumed that test cases are selected with replacement. Although this assumption has been well known to be less realistic, it has still been used in previous theoretical work because it renders the analyses more tractable. This paper presents a theoretical investigation aimed at comparing the e€ectivene...

Stage Life Testing with Missing Stage Information - an EM-Algorithm Approach

We consider a stage life testing model and assume that the information at which levels the failures occurred is not available. In order to find estimates for the lifetime distribution parameters, we propose an EM-algorithm approach which interprets the lack of knowledge about the stages as missing information. Furthermore, we illustrate the implementation difficulties caused by an increasing nu...

A Necessary and Sufficient Condition for Partition Testing to be Better Than Random Testing

A necessary a n d sufficient condition is given for par t i t ion testing to be better t h a n random testing. I . INTRODUCTION Partition testing is an approach to program testing in which the input domain of the program is divided into partitions and test cases are selected from these partitions. A number of papers have attempted to clarify the relation between the performance of these two tes...
